Editor's Choice -- NanoWisdoms - Extend. Quotes -- The Imamat on the Qur'an and their absolute discretion to interpret it for Ismailis

In 1986, in his first CBC interview, Mawlana Hazar Imam said "The only miracle which you in Islam is the Qur'an."

Since Hazrat Ali, the Imamat has interpreted the Qur'an for Ismailis, and theirs is the only authoritative interpretation Ismailis accept. Indeed Hazar Imam himself said, in 1975, "On the spiritual plane, the Imam's authority is absolute. Ismailis believe therefore that what the Imam says is the only true interpretation possible."

However, despite this absolute authority to interpret the Qur'an at his sole and unfettered discretion, what may be surprising to learn is that Hazar Imam himself has explained, from his perspective, his discretion has limits.

Beyond the Imamat's interpretation, the Qur'an grants each of us the freedom to interpret it ourselves. Often, however, our right to interpret is recast to mean all interpretations are equally correct even though both Hazar Imam and Mawlana Sultan Muhammad Shah have explained we may be mistaken in our interpretations. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir went so far to explain that "a person may single out any verse from the Noble Qur'an (and interpret it wrongly) and may fall down deeper than the distance between the Heaven and the Earth."

The five NanoWisdoms Extended Quotes linked below highlight the Imamat's guidance that helps us understand the role of the Qur'an in our faith, how to best interpret it and gain knowledge of our faith, as well as some of the Imamat's own interpretations of, and perspectives about, the Qur'an.

We hope they will both enlighten you and given you much to think about.

Warm regards

Like many other non-commercial, public-service thematic website aggregators, Ismaili Digest is just a thematic aggregator. We publish short 50-60 word digests of all their content and provide direct links to their original pages saving you time, extra page loads and clicks. For the website publishers, direct links ensure they'll get the maximum number of potential visitors reaching their content so their hard work gets the maximum exposure.

Also featured are other important articles, research and opinions relevant to the community's well being, intellectual growth, best practises and administration. And all served with a drop of humour as well, because "we are a community that welcomes the smile!"

Ismaili Digest is not associated with any private Ismaili website, whether aggregated by Ismaili Digest or not. All websites Ismaili Digest aggregates are independent websites run by their individual owners and we are not responsible for content they publish.
