Islamic jurists have debated for centuries, whether or not listening to music is unlawful, although it is not clear how the question arose as there is no direct censure against music in the Qur'an.

In pre-Islamic times, the oral recitation of poetry was the mark of artistic achievement. At the time, the common form of poetry was the qasida.

The Ikhwan al-Safa (Brethren of Purity), a tenth-century brotherhood that flourished in Basra, Iraq, who wrote an encyclopedic work (Rasa'il) on sciences and philosophy, include a section on music emphasising that music reflects the harmonious beauty of the universe.

And Ismaili Pirs also incorporated musical traditions of the Indian subcontinent to teach Islamic and Ismaili concepts.
