I Asked Thousands of Biologists When Life Begins. The Answer Wasn't Popular
QUILLETTE.COM -- After receiving my Ph.D. this year, I found myself in a minor media whirlwind because of my finding that 96% of 5,577 biologists said human life begins at fertilization. 89% of them identified as liberal; 85% as pro-choice and 63% as non-religious. Originally, I surveyed Americans and 76% believed they deserve to know when a human's life begins in order to give informed consent to abortion procedures; 93% believe a human's life is worthy of legal protection once it begins; and 80% said biologists were "most qualified to answer the question, 'When does a human's life begin?'." So I surveyed professors in biology departments of over 1,000 institutions around the world and 96% of responding biologists affirmed that a human life begins at fertilization. ...

Senate Democrats Fail to Federally Enshrine Abortion on Demand Until Birth
FRCBLOG.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 1983: "Children need to be cared for from the time they are conceived until they reach maturity ..."; Mawlana Sultan Muhammad Shah: "The immediate religious duty of all my spiritual children is to learn perfect infant care from conception till maturity."] ARTICLE: The Women's Health Protection Act, more aptly referred to as the "Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act," is the most pro-abortion piece of legislation ever seen at the federal level. Its existence underscores the profound worldview divide between Republicans and Democrats, who increasingly disagree on the definition of personhood. While Republicans routinely vote to recognize preborn babies as human beings deserving of the protection of our nation's laws, Democrats now regularly vote for abortion despite advances in embryology and technology that make the medical and moral case of the humanity of preborn children undeniable. Consider the legislation itself. The bill, which ...

Study: Accountability to God Means a Greater Sense of Well-Being
MINDMATTERS.AI -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 1964: "You must not believe that you are here for what is only one existence, and that thereafter, you have to account for nothing."] ARTICLE: A recent study found that religious believers who embrace accountability to God (as distinct from church attendance, prayer and meditation) experience higher levels of psychological well-being on three of the four variables: mattering to others, dignity and meaning in their lives. The study also found that this relationship is stronger among those who pray more often, suggesting that accountability coupled with communication may be a powerful combination for well-being. Co-author Dr. Kent, said "People who embrace theistic accountability see themselves as answerable to God. They welcome responsibilities that are associated with their faith and view accountability to God as a gift that helps them lead happy and successful lives." As for happiness, that came from other aspects of the respondents' faith such as the ...

Timeless Wisdom: George Washington Deemed Religion and Morality Essential to Political Prosperity
ARCHIVE.PH -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 2006: "A healthy sense of public integrity, in my view, will be difficult to nurture over time without a strong religious underpinning."] ARTICLE: In his Farewell address, President George Washington said something many modern Americans would find nonsensical: "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports" and offered two reasons why. Firstly, he referred to oaths taken in courts of law or on assuming public offices. Such oaths invoked God as a witness and, for the genuinely religious, any deceit carried the fear of penalty in the afterlife. Secondly, he said "Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion." Echoing this, President John Adams said: "I never read of an irreligious character in ... history, nor have I known one in life, who was not a rascal. Name ...

Ismailism: Its Historical Background and the Challenge of the Seventies -- BoAI Vol #2
GOOGLE.COM -- What then of the seventies? Is it possible to define the dimensions of the challenge which lies ahead? I must immediately remind you that Mawlana Hazar Imam has on many occasions said he has no patience with reformers of the Ismaili faith. Ismailism does not need to be reformed. Institutions and administrative machinery can and have been modified by others better structured to meet needs, however this is not reforming the faith. With rapid change we have witnessed in East Africa during this decade; with the emergence of a new, university educated generation; with value systems challenged, the very foundation on which our community's social structure has been based is being questioned; with possible impatience with status quo by the youth ...

Think of Ismaili Digest as the Front Page of all the best Ismaili websites! Ismaili Digest automatically and continuously brings together all new articles, photos, videos, etc. from Ismaili websites -- like The Ismaili, Simerg, IIS, NanoWisdoms, AKDN, Ismailimail, etc. -- so you can see them all at once. Direct links to over 15,000 web-pages from the best Ismaili websites already available. Ismaili Digest saves you (and those who are not tech savvy, such as seniors) the effort of having to visit them one by one to keep up to date, or have your inbox cluttered with emails from each of them when they publish new content. In a busy world, our sense of belonging to our community sometimes tends to wither and fade (particularly for isolated Jamati members). We hope Ismaili Digest's simplicity and comprehensiveness will help you feel connected as well as feel the local and global pulse of the community. Like many other non-commercial, public-service thematic website aggregators, Ismaili Digest is just a thematic aggregator. We publish short 50-60 word digests of all their content and provide direct links to their original pages saving you time, extra page loads and clicks. For the website publishers, direct links ensure they'll get the maximum number of potential visitors reaching their content so their hard work gets the maximum exposure. Also featured are other important articles, research and opinions relevant to the community's well being, intellectual growth, best practises and administration. And all served with a drop of humour as well, because "we are a community that welcomes the smile!" Ismaili Digest is not associated with any private Ismaili website, whether aggregated by Ismaili Digest or not. All websites Ismaili Digest aggregates are independent websites run by their individual owners and we are not responsible for content they publish. |
