Pirs explain in ginans the transitory nature of physical life
Ginans are a vast collection comprising several hundred poetic compositions which have been a central part of the religious life of the Nizari Ismaili community of the Indian subcontinent that today resides in many countries around the world. Derived from the Sanskrit gyan, meaning contemplative knowledge, ginans refer to the poetic compositions authored by Ismaili Pirs, who came to the Indian ...

How to Talk about Religious Ethics
FIRSTTHINGS.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 2008: "As time evolves, you will be expected to change certain value systems.... [We should] explain to the others that we have our own ethics. We do not ask them to share all our ethics, nor should they ask us to share all theirs." ~~ Hazar Imam, 1960: "The real principle of Islam is that faith is logical.... The very heart of Islam is logical. There is no hocus-pocus. There is no nonsense. It is clear and it is lucid and it is understandable."] ARTICLE: Jason Adam is an ordinary Christian trying to be obedient to his Lord. Adam said that the reason for his choice of uniform "comes down to a faith-based decision." I cannot imagine the bravery it requires to speak these words, knowing how they'll be the subject of national attention and elite contempt. Moral convictions may arise from faith, but faith-based moral principles are simultaneously grounded in reason. Christian ethics are not simply fiats to be obeyed because of divine decree. We should not, and indeed cannot, separate the beliefs of faith from the convictions and evidence of reason. Moral principles are either true or false, sound or unsound, regardless ...

Why Conservatives Are Happier Than Liberals
NYTIMES.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 2000: "A balanced life, which is guided by faith and intellect, is built upon a value system which you can trust [will], Insha'llah, bring you happiness, spiritual happiness and worldly happiness ... it will give you happiness in many different ways."] ARTICLE: Who is happier: liberals or conservatives? Liberals obviously, right? Wrong, according to much data over decades. Take Pew Research. In 2006 they reported conservative Republicans were 68% more likely than liberal Democrats to say they were "very happy" about their lives. But why? Religion and family seem key. Conservatives make up 80% of religous Americans, liberals just 20%. And religious people are twice as likely to say they are very happy about their lives than secularists (43% to 23%). 52% of married, religious, politically conservative people (with kids) are very happy versus just 14% of single, secular, liberal people without kids. The very happiest Americans are either "extremely conservative" (48%) or "extremely liberal" (35%). The least happy are dead-center "moderates." The Occupy Wall Street protesters may have looked like a miserable mess. In truth none, it seems, are happier than the Tea Partiers, many of whom ...

The "Science" Proves It: Conservatives are Happier Than Liberals
AMAC.US -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 1967: "Western Europe and North America possess much that can be envied. They also face social and moral conflicts which are far more daunting than known in Asia or Africa." ~~ 2008: "I have no intention whatsoever, of allowing compromises to come into our value systems to please passing concepts about limitless freedom in social relations."] ARTICLE: A 2012 study found that conservatives believe in "the objectivity of moral principles" with "clear prescriptions for how to live." And that, "Conservatives score higher than liberals on measures associated with positive adjustment and mental health such as personal agency, positive outlook, transcendent moral beliefs and fairness." Translation? The conservative worldview leads to a greater chance of a morally clear, healthy, well-adjusted life. Moral codes that "lack clarity and promote flexibility," the study noted, may cause feelings of alienation. In this light, last month's poll from left leaning Axios revealed that the most intellectually intolerant Americans are young liberals. It found 71% of young Democrats would not date someone of the opposite party, compared to only 31% of Republicans. And 37% of Democrats outright refuse to be friends with someone from the opposite party, compared to only 5% Republicans. In short, Democrats, not Republicans, may really be guilty of "intolerance." In the past ...

The Jubilee and seventy years of war on Christian morality
CONSERVATIVEWOMAN.CO.UK -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 1967: "What has been called the permissive society where anything goes, nothing matters, nothing is sacred or private any more, is not a promising foundation for a brave and upright new world." Hazar Imam, 1999: "It's clear that uncontrolled freedom becomes license.... It's probably the most challenging issue that I have to address today."] ARTICLE: It was of course in the 'Swinging Sixties' that the permissive society got under way. And then, with permissive floodgates opened, abandoning Biblical morality became cool and progressive and heralded as a liberal virtue. So began the process whereby on film, TV, stage and the printed page the old landmarks of propriety and decency were removed and the boundaries were constantly being pushed out. Where were the churches when the permissive society was running riot? The defence of Christian moral teaching was generally left to a few valiant individuals. The sexual revolution has continued up to the present day. One of its latest manifestations ...

Rex Murphy: Desecration of 48 churches is a national tragedy, yet government seems to care little about Christians
NATIONALPOST.COM -- While the federal government rightly hosted two consecutive summits on combating anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, attended by the Prime Minister, what I find inexplicable is there is no scheduled summit dealing with the current wave of destructive hostility directed at Christian worshippers. Especially since, that within a period of just two weeks, Canada had 48 acts of violance against Christian churches: from vandalism to total destruction by fire. We may not be in an age of faith and religion, but for many Canadians faith not an incidental pastime. It is core to their being. Indigenous leaders were angered by these attacks on their churces, some of which had served their communities for a long time. Two chruches had no Aboriginal associations. One was built by refugees who fled religious persecution. "Our church brought together a diverse congregation of Coptic, Eritrean, Ethiopian, Iraqi and Lebanese ...

The Development of the Ismaili State in Iran -- BoAI Vol #2
GOOGLE.COM -- While in Egypt, the Imam Al-Mustansir had informed Hassan that after him, Nizar was to be his successor as Caliph and Imam and commanded Hassan to spread the Ismailia da'wa in Iran. Worried about the state of affairs in Egypt, Hassan was convinced that he must build an Ismaili stronghold in Iran to propagate the Ismaili cause and focused on the mountainous regions. Within ten years Ismailis were firmly established in Alamut and the surrounding districts and considerable success was achieved in the Ismaili dawa in Syria and Eastern Iran. In fact, there was no town in Syria and Iran where Ismaili missionaries were not working either openly or secretly and, after another fourteen years, there were altogether more than two hundred castles under ...

We hope Ismaili Digest's simplicity and comprehensiveness will help you feel connected as well as feel the local and global pulse of the community. Like many other non-commercial, public-service thematic website aggregators, Ismaili Digest is just a thematic aggregator. We publish short 50-60 word digests of all their content and provide direct links to their original pages saving you time, extra page loads and clicks. For the website publishers, direct links ensure they'll get the maximum number of potential visitors reaching their content so their hard work gets the maximum exposure. Also featured are other important articles, research and opinions relevant to the community's well being, intellectual growth, best practises and administration. And all served with a drop of humour as well, because "we are a community that welcomes the smile!" Ismaili Digest is not associated with any private Ismaili website, whether aggregated by Ismaili Digest or not.
