Wade, we have, in this newsletter, highlighted the clear and consistent positions of both Mawlana Hazar Imam and Mawlana Sultan Muhammad Shah that bear directly on the issue, as well as the position of thousands of biologists. |

I Asked Thousands of Biologists When Life Begins. The Answer Wasn't Popular
QUILLETTE.COM -- After receiving my Ph.D. this year, I found myself in a minor media whirlwind because of my finding that 96% of 5,577 biologists said human life begins at fertilization. 89% of them identified as liberal; 85% as pro-choice and 63% as non-religious. Originally, I surveyed Americans and 76% believed they deserve to know when a human's life begins in order to give informed consent to abortion procedures; 93% believe a human's life is worthy of legal protection once it begins; and 80% said biologists were "most qualified to answer the question, 'When does a human's life begin?'." So I surveyed professors in biology departments of over 1,000 institutions around the world and 96% of responding biologists affirmed that a human life begins at fertilization. ...

2012 British Medical Journal paper explains why "after-birth abortion" (the pro-choice case for infanticide) is "acceptable"
SLATE.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 1983: "Children need to be cared for from the time they are conceived until they reach maturity ..." ~~ Mawlana Sultan Muhammad Shah: "The immediate religious duty of all my spiritual children is to learn perfect infant care from conception till maturity."] ARTICLE: Just when you thought the religious right couldn't get any "crazier," here comes the academic left with an even crazier idea: after-birth abortion. No, I didn't make this up. In the British Medical Journal's Journal of Medical Ethics, Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva propose: "When circumstances occur after birth such that they would have justified abortion, what we call after-birth abortion should be permissible.... We propose to call this practice 'after-birth abortion', rather than 'infanticide.' ... We claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances ...

Tolerance - the gateway drug to every evil
CONSERVATIVEWOMAN.CO.UK -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 1976: "What was once wrong is now simply unconventional, and for the sake of individual freedom must be *tolerated*. What is *tolerated* soon becomes accepted. Contrarily, what was once right is now viewed as outdated, old fashioned and is often the target of ridicule."] ARTICLE: Tolerance, as practiced today, is utterly corrupting. Originally, it meant to endure, to forbear, to put up with bad things. But now it is an obligation, because that which must be endured is everywhere: there is no end to the putting up with things. Far from being a positive trait, it is a negative concept compelling us to submit to everything which offends common decency. To be tolerant these days is not merely to permit, but to celebrate that which we know to be wrong. What tolerance has wrought is the celebration of terrible ideas. Tolerance tells you to put up and shut up. Say no to tolerance. It is the gateway drug to every evil. Tolerance is the trojan horse underwriting the destruction of morality, of conscience ...

Who Doesn't Want to Hear the Other Side's View?
MEDIUM.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 2015: "Is that message clear? You listen to people you don't like!" ~~ Hazar Imam, 1965: " What does happen, and this is a danger, is that the left-wing attitudes tend [to destroy] the respect of one individual towards another."] ARTICLE: Time and again, research shows people with left-wing/liberal views are more likely to block or unfriend their ideological counterparts than those with right-wing/conservative views. 2012 and 2014 Pew Research polls found liberals were more likely to block, unfriend or hide someone they disagreed with on social networking sites than conservatives. A 2014 YouGov UK poll found that Labour and Liberal Democrat supporters were much more likely to find it harder to befriend a UKIP supporter than vice versa. 2017 and 2018 The Dartmouth's polls found that student Democrats were much more likely to feel uncomfortable having Republican roommates or friends than vice versa. A 2020 Pew Research poll found that Democrats were more likely to avoid committed relationships with Republicans than vice versa. In 2021 ...

The Left Is United By Who They Despise, Not What They Support
THEFEDERALIST.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 2008: "The quest for identity can then become an exclusionary process -- so that we define ourselves less by what we are for and more by whom we are against. When this happens, diversity turns quickly from a source of beauty to a cause of discord."] ARTICLE: To understand what binds the coalition of conflicting groups on the left together, it is more useful to examine what they oppose rather than the policies they support. And the glue that holds them together is scapegoating: identifying a villain, the scapegoat, the victim to be targeted who is blamed for inciting conflict. As The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy explains: the targeted victim is a monstrous creature that deserves to be punished and eliminated for peace. Identifying the left's scapegoats isn't difficult: masculine men become scapegoats when dubbed toxic, sexist enforcers of patriarchy. Stable nuclear families are targets for perpetuating gender roles. The terms for the scapegoats -- the "deplorables," sexists and the racists, rednecks and retrogrades, bigots, different stripes of -phobes -- is what holds the fragile bloc together. Party operatives blame ...

Sufism and the Integration of Man -- BoAI Vol #3
GOOGLE.COM -- Islam is the religion of unity (tawhid) and all aspects of Islamic doctrine and practice reflect this central principle. Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed by the Shahadah, La ilaha ill'Allah. But only the Sufi, has realized the mysteries of tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. Only he sees God everywhere. The whole programme of Sufism, is to cure man from hypocrisy and to make him whole. Many today would like to be sophisticated at all costs, even preferring to be sophisticated and enter hell rather than be simple and go to paradise, for as Christ said ...

Volume #3: Great Sufis and Sufism -- Supplementary Pages -- BoAI
GOOGLE.COM -- Mawlana Sultan Muhammad Shah: "You ought to engage your mind in the teachings of Sufism. But remember that even Sufism is only a "Tariqat" (a path). You should reach "Haqiqat" (the Reality). There were many learned people before you who followed our religion such as Mansur. He could go to paradise (Jannat), but he aimed higher. He achieved the ultimate reality. Hazrat Ali has said "One who recognises one's 'Self', recognises Allah."" (Dar-es-Salaam, 1899) ~~ "Read Rumi's Mathanavi and Diwan of Shams Tabrez. You can also achieve the spiritual greatness of Pir Shams, Pir Sadar Din and Mowlana Rumi. You should study the philosophy of religion and try to understand the true meanings of Quran-e-Sharif." (Zanzibar, 1899) ...

Think of Ismaili Digest as the Front Page of all the best Ismaili websites! Ismaili Digest automatically and continuously brings together all new articles, photos, videos, etc. from Ismaili websites -- like The Ismaili, Simerg, IIS, NanoWisdoms, AKDN, Ismailimail, etc. -- so you can see them all at once. Direct links to over 15,000 web-pages from the best Ismaili websites already available. Ismaili Digest saves you (and those who are not tech savvy, such as seniors) the effort of having to visit them one by one to keep up to date, or have your inbox cluttered with emails from each of them when they publish new content. In a busy world, our sense of belonging to our community sometimes tends to wither and fade (particularly for isolated Jamati members). We hope Ismaili Digest's simplicity and comprehensiveness will help you feel connected as well as feel the local and global pulse of the community. Like many other non-commercial, public-service thematic website aggregators, Ismaili Digest is just a thematic aggregator. We publish short 50-60 word digests of all their content and provide direct links to their original pages saving you time, extra page loads and clicks. For the website publishers, direct links ensure they'll get the maximum number of potential visitors reaching their content so their hard work gets the maximum exposure. Also featured are other important articles, research and opinions relevant to the community's well being, intellectual growth, best practises and administration. And all served with a drop of humour as well, because "we are a community that welcomes the smile!" Ismaili Digest is not associated with any private Ismaili website, whether aggregated by Ismaili Digest or not. All websites Ismaili Digest aggregates are independent websites run by their individual owners and we are not responsible for content they publish. |
