AI Is Not (Yet) an Intelligent Cause
MINDMATTERS.AI -- So-called "white hat" hackers who test the security of AI have found it surprisingly easy to fool. Last week [2018] a group of researchers described a turtle they had 3D printed. Most people would say it looks just like a turtle, but an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm saw it differently. Most of the time, the AI thought the turtle looked like a rifle. In another test a computer scientist at UC Berkeley subtly altered a stop sign with stickers. It fooled an autonomous vehicle's image recognition system into "thinking" it was a 45 mph speed limit sign. Humans could immediately recognize the stop sign, but the car did not. It's no wonder that autonomous car makers shuddered at the results. ...

Tashkent's Underground Masterpieces: Subway or Museum?
ARAMCOWORLD.COM -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Be sure to go through the many slide shows in article. Recall, too, the video of Tehran's amazing subway we posted two months ago.] ARTICLE: In 1964, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan, Sharof Rashidov, envisioned more than a utilitarian transportation system for Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan: He wanted a metro that could reflect the history and culture of the Uzbek people. Each of the breathtaking 29 stations (with plans for 45 more by 2025) is a chapter in Uzbekistan's history, a story told in tileworks, murals and mosaics amid elegantly thematic lighting and architecture. "We wanted to make the Metro even better than the Moscow's, which was like a fairy tale," explains Vladimir Burmakin. Muhammad Ali likens Tashkent's subway stations, its art and architecture, to entering a museum where one can view history and culture exhibited on the walls. At Alisher Navoiy station, sculptor Ahmet Shaymuradov spent four years ...

'Guardian of Faith': The Spiritual Authority of the Imam in Shia Ismaili Islam
ISMAILIWELLSPRINGS.WORDPRESS.COM -- As Quran declares, appointment of the rightful Imam is not the function of ordinary human beings, but is prerogative only of Allah, as this verse categorically declares: "And We made them Imams guiding by Our command...." In Shia tradition, there is no room for Qyas (analogy) or Istishab (association) for murids to decide who can be their Imam. Only Imam has authority - that has been bestowed to him by God - to decide who will be the Imam next to him. In Shia Islam, Imamat is a hereditary office which is transferred from one Imam to the next through 'Nas'. ...

Think of Ismaili Digest as the Front Page of all the best Ismaili websites! Ismaili Digest automatically and continuously brings together all new articles, photos, videos, etc. from Ismaili websites -- like The Ismaili, Simerg, IIS, NanoWisdoms, AKDN, Ismailimail, etc. -- so you can see them all at once. Direct links to over 15,000 web-pages from the best Ismaili websites already available. Ismaili Digest saves you (and those who are not tech savvy, such as seniors) the effort of having to visit them one by one to keep up to date, or have your inbox cluttered with emails from each of them when they publish new content. In a busy world, our sense of belonging to our community sometimes tends to wither and fade (particularly for isolated Jamati members). We hope Ismaili Digest's simplicity and comprehensiveness will help you feel connected as well as feel the local and global pulse of the community. Like many other non-commercial, public-service thematic website aggregators, Ismaili Digest is just a thematic aggregator. We publish short 50-60 word digests of all their content and provide direct links to their original pages saving you time, extra page loads and clicks. For the website publishers, direct links ensure they'll get the maximum number of potential visitors reaching their content so their hard work gets the maximum exposure. Also featured are other important articles, research and opinions relevant to the community's well being, intellectual growth, best practises and administration. And all served with a drop of humour as well, because "we are a community that welcomes the smile!" Ismaili Digest is not associated with any private Ismaili website, whether aggregated by Ismaili Digest or not. All websites Ismaili Digest aggregates are independent websites run by their individual owners and we are not responsible for content they publish. |
