Tuesday's Teachings (From Life)
Russell Crowe Is Right, If You Think 'Master And Commander' Is Boring, You Need To Grow Up
[H/T MOHIB EBRAHIM] -- THEFEDERALIST.COM -- Peter Weir's 2003 masterpiece, "Master and Commander," is a film about manhood, fatherhood, service, and sacrifice. Adapted from Patrick O'Brian's epic Aubrey-Maturin series and starring Russell Crowe, the film is set at sea during the Napoleonic Wars. It tells the story of British Captain Jack Aubrey's mission to find and sink a French privateer that's been harassing the British whaling fleet off the coast of Brazil. In other words, it's not a comic-book film for woke zoomers and millennials trapped in adolescence. It's a film for adults who want to see a nuanced portrayal of masculine virtue set amid breathtaking cinematography and awesome naval battle scenes. Crowe himself explained as much over the weekend when someone on Twitter snarked ...

Neuroscience Can't Dismiss near Death Experiences
MINDMATTERS.AI -- Neuroscientist Christof Koch just published an article in Scientific American on near-death experiences (NDEs). But when Koch addresses neuroscience's attempts to explain NDEs his discussion goes off the rails. The number and variety of materialist theories he describes conveys a sense of groping for any plausible materialist explanation rather than sober scientific investigation. The lack of evidence for materialist theories is a problem. Koch explains: "As a scientist, I operate under the hypothesis that our thoughts, memories, percepts and experiences are the result of natural powers of our brain rather than of [non-material ones] ... The challenge is to explain NDEs within a natural framework." Koch is mistaken. The scientific challenge is to explain NDEs, full stop. It's sobering that neuroscience has utterly failed to explain how the brain and mind relate. It is as if cosmology had failed ...

In a busy world, our sense of belonging to our community sometimes tends to wither and fade (particularly for isolated Jamati members). We hope Ismaili Digest's simplicity and comprehensiveness will help you feel connected as well as feel the local and global pulse of the community. Like many other non-commercial, public-service thematic website aggregators, Ismaili Digest is just a thematic aggregator. We publish short 50-60 word digests of all their content and provide direct links to their original pages saving you time, extra page loads and clicks. For the website publishers, direct links ensure they'll get the maximum number of potential visitors reaching their content so their hard work gets the maximum exposure. Also featured are other important articles, research and opinions relevant to the community's well being, intellectual growth, best practises and administration. And all served with a drop of humour as well, because "we are a community that welcomes the smile!" Ismaili Digest is not associated with any private Ismaili website, whether aggregated by Ismaili Digest or not. All websites Ismaili Digest aggregates are independent websites run by their individual owners and we are not responsible for content they publish. |
