APNEWS.COM -- After a heated, 14-hour debate, Tunisia's parliament on Wednesday rejected a motion calling on France to apologize for crimes permitted during the colonial era and pay reparations. The debate came amid renewed anger in some European countries about colonialism's crimes, stemming from protests in the U.S. over racial injustice and police violence. "We are not going to feed Tunisians with such motions," said Osama Khelifi of the Qalb Tounes party. Lawmaker Mustapha Ben Ahmed of the Tahya Tounes party said, "We are for the most part the children of Bourguiba, who led the liberation struggle of the country after long years of imprisonment and deportations and built modern Tunisia by generalizing education and by emancipating women." France occupied Tunisia as a protectorate for 75 years, from ...

[H/T SIMERG] -- NYTIMES.COM -- "This major disaster is going to change our relationship to death; I'm not exactly sure how, but I am certain it will," Shannon Lee Dawdy, said. Long before the major religions, humans used rituals to deal with death. They honored the sacredness of life by burying the dead. This pandemic arrived in a country drifting away from many of its faith traditions. During the flu pandemic of 1918, many churches closed for services, but there was little question that a minister could visit the dying. A century ago, priests were "answering sick calls night and day," one Catholic newspaper reported at the time. Now nurses and doctors, not spiritual leaders or families, are most likely to be death's witnesses. "There was a vast ritual practice ...

THOMASAQUINAS.EDU -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Essential reading for all parents. Sayers offers the most profound insights into what should be education's objectives and how to achieve them we have ever seen. However, they are almost impossible to accomplish in conventional schools.] ARTICLE: The mediaeval scheme of education highlights what was thought to be the correct object and order of the educative process. The syllabus had two parts: the Trivium and Quadrivium, of which the Trivium is our interest. It consisted of three parts: Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric, in that order. The first thing to notice is these "subjects" are not what we would call "subjects" at all: *they are only methods of dealing with subjects*. The whole of the Trivium was intended to teach the proper use of the tools of learning, *before the pupil began to apply them to "subjects"* at all. First, he learned the structure of a language. Second, how to use language; how to define his terms and make accurate statements; how to construct an argument and how to detect fallacies in argument. That is, dialectic embraced Logic and Disputation. Thirdly, he learned to express himself -- how to say what he had to say elegantly and persuasively. At the end of his course, he was required to ...

In this groundbreaking work that sets apart fact and legend, authors Finkelstein and Silberman use significant archeological discoveries to provide historical information about biblical Israel and its neighbors challenging the fundamentalist readings of the scriptures. They argue that crucial evidence (or a telling lack of evidence) reflect the world of the later authors rather than actual historical facts. ...

EVOLUTIONNEWS.ORG -- [ISMAILI DIGEST ED: Hazar Imam, 2003: "The true test [of education] is the ability of students and graduates to engage with what they *do not know and to work out a solution*."] ARTICLE: What we have here is a teachable moment. Can lay people offer a judgment on "a technical debate?" Any argument of the form "Only professional Xs can judge X-ness" suffers from nasty logical problems C.S. Lewis outlines that also apply to controversies over Darwinism. Darwin's theory invokes technical details but, at the bottom, there are simply *chains of reasoning*. Thus, any rational person -- who does some technical homework and studies what Darwinists and their critics have said -- is perfectly able to draw his own conclusions. Especially when prominent evolutionary biologists answer a question like "How did the molecular systems of life arose?" in plain-English: "There are no detailed Darwinian accounts for the evolution of any fundamental biochemical or cellular system, only a variety of wishful speculations." Interestingly, C.S. Lewis ...
YOUTUBE.COM -- Expelled's central point is there is no academic freedom to the Darwin juggernaut. Academics who simply bring up intelligent design find they are mocked, fired or their careers over. It's chilling and reveals how incredibly narrow-minded the scientific world really is. As a showcase of how deeply flawed the evolutionist's outlook is, Expelled is an effective, thought-provoking film. Most scientists, particularly radical atheists, love to point out how sensible science is and how fantastical religion is. But watching Expelled changed all that for me. Scientists' ideas are no less outlandish than religious ones. Evolutionists claim that evolution explains everything. Yet when pressed, they all admit that they have no idea how life came about. Both Michael Ruse and Richard Dawkins agreed that if there was an intelligent designer, it certainly wasn't God -- but it could be visiting aliens who came and seeded life onto earth. ...

GOOGLE.COM -- Imam Abul Hasan Ali was the first Ismaili Imam to emerge slowly from obscurity after Alamut's fall. He was governor of Kirman during the Afsharid and Zand periods, highly learned, a friend of the local Sufis and patronized the local artists. A few chambers of his residence are reported to have been decorated with a rare collection of the Iranian paintings. When the Mughal emperor Aurengzeb (d. 1707) reportedly persecuted the Ismailis in Gujrat and Sind, most of them took refuge in Iran. Some returned afterwards, but many settled and died in Kirman. Their graves still exist, with dates written in Khojki script. When Aga Muhammad Khan massacred a large number of the local inhabitants in Kirman, the Ismailis were however ...
