Franklin responded "...a republic, madam. If you can keep it." A republic? But isn't our country a democracy? Actually, pure democracy frightened the Convention Delegates as a path to mob rule so they rejected it. Instead, they built both democratic and non-democratic features into the Constitution to protect liberty. That's why Wyoming has 2 Senators, the same number as California and every other state, so large population states like California can't overwhelm the needs and interests of small states like Wyoming.
