AREOMAGAZINE.COM -- For centuries, theorists have worried that unrestrained democracy could lead to a tyranny of the majority, where the majority rides roughshod over minorities. What we often see today is instead a kind of tyranny of the minority: where a particularly extreme and motivated minority wields outsized power over a majority, too indifferent or too scared to oppose it. However, activist minorities draw their strength from the tacit assumption they represent more people than they actually do.There is a reason why we make decisions based on how many people like a certain option, rather than how strongly its supporters feel about it: if intensity of feeling is allowed into the picture, that would create an unhealthy dynamic incentivizing ...

[H/T SAHIL BADRUDDIN] -- INC.COM -- One of the biggest reasons most of us don't set out to achieve a huge goal is that we think we first need to develop a comprehensively detailed grand plan, one where every step is charted, every milestone identified, where success is pre-ordained. But because we don't have that kind of plan -- because creating that kind of plan is basically impossible -- we hesitate. And so we never start. Jobs knew that plans are never perfect. Only in hindsight can they appear that way. Instead Steve Jobs believed in the fundamental power of belief itself and of using that belief to motivate and inspire. As Jobs said ...

AEON.CO -- If the sultan of Mysore, in southwestern India, had had a bit more luck, George Washington might be known as the Haider Ali of North America. After the Continental Congress declared independence in 1776, it looked for ways to cooperate with Mysore, France's South Asian ally against Britain. In 1781, Pennsylvania commissioned a warship named the Hyder-Ally, demonstrating American elites' affinity for Mysore's cause. Philip Freneau, one of the country's leading poets, wrote a poem in honour of the ship and its namesake: "From an Eastern prince she takes her name, Who, smit with freedom's sacred flame Usurping Britons brought to shame, His country's wrongs avenging." Clearly, these 18th-century Americans saw faraway Asian peoples as exemplars of liberty. Haider and his son Tipu seem to have approached the status of household ...
STRATEGIC-CULTURE.ORG -- Benjamin Franklin's French networks had deep connections into India that saw pro-American Muslim leader Hydar Ali attack the British Base near Madras with thousands of Indian soldiers. Ali was supported by French troops on land and sea commanded by Admiral Suffren. Hydar Ali's forces innovated rockets which decimated British troops, forcing Britain to re-direct over 20% of their naval fleet away from the Americas. America's flagship of the Continental fleet was named the Hydar Ali in his honor. In Morocco, the first nation to recognize America's independence, Emperor Sidi Mohammed saved American shipping from the ravages of Barbary pirates. Sidi Mohammed agreed to supply protection for America's ships and guaranteed them safe harbor. The Continental Congress passed an act which ...

MEDIUM.COM -- The idea of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) is great. The reality, though, not so much. Dr. Marcia Angell, former Editor in Chief of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) wrote in 2009 that, "It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on ... authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor." Dr. Relman another former Editor in Chief of the NEJM said in 2002 that "Academic institutions of this country are allowing themselves to be the paid agents of the pharmaceutical industry. I think it's disgraceful." The editors of the most important medical journals in the world, gradually learn that their life's work is being slowly and steadily corrupted. The examples in medicine are everywhere. Research ...
