THEATLANTIC.COM -- The speed with which this crisis has hit local economies exceeds that of even the Great Depression and has eviscerated state and local government finances. A survey by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities found that 90% of American cities plan to make deep cuts to their budgets and services. Half of those will need to make last-resort cuts to their police and fire departments. Public schools are overwhelmingly dependent on state and local revenue and, if estimates that school-district revenues will drop by an average of 15% are right, 1 in 12 teachers may lose their jobs. In the worst-hit states, 1 in 5 may go. The fiscal crisis is building just as most cities ...
CONSERVATIVEREVIEW.COM -- Swiss officials announced an end to the national emergency. They have already been in phase one for quite some time and have not seen a resurgence of hospitalizations or new cases overall. Their elementary schools reopened on May 11, and there have been no problems. We're seeing this throughout Europe and in states like Florida, Georgia, and Texas. There is no resurgence in hospitalizations. On Monday, even the director of health at the World Health Organization, María Neira, is now beginning to rule out a mass second wave. In fact, Switzerland is doing so well that they announced they will reopen all outdoor zoos and pools, all businesses, high schools and allow all gatherings up to 300 people. Japan is home to the largest city in the world, ...

Along with garlic and some sliced herbs, it was probably my favorite olive dish I've ever had anywhere in the world. Another ...

CONSERVATIVEREVIEW.COM -- The CDC just came out with a report that should be earth-shattering, yet it will go into the thick pile of vital information not getting out to the public. For the first time, the CDC has offered a real estimate of the overall death rate for COVID-19. And, under its most likely scenario, the number is 0.26% -- almost exactly where Stanford researchers pegged it a month ago. Until now, we have been ridiculed for thinking the death rate was that low, as opposed to the 3.4% estimate of the World Health Organization, which helped drive the panic and the lockdowns. Now the CDC is agreeing to the lower rate in plain ink. Plus, ultimately we might find out that the IFR is even lower from numerous studies and ...
OFF-GUARDIAN.ORG -- We are no longer at epidemic levels of COVID-19 in the UK (0.27% are infected; 0.4% is the low end for an "epidemic"). And all-cause deaths have slipped back below average. It seems time to look back and try and draw conclusions.... The biostatistician Knut Wittkowski came at things from a different angle, the "null hypothesis" angle -- a default, in layman terms. He assumed COVID-19 was a normal viral respiratory disease and, at the end of March, wrote a compelling paper showing that "respiratory diseases [including COVID-19]... last about 2 months." Respiratory viral diseases generally peak in mid-winter, but COVID-19 peaked at Easter. If we simply slide the COVID-19 deaths [black line in the graph] from spring to winter, we see both the death-toll and extent of the epidemic are similar to recent bad (but not dramatic) influenza years. We also have "controls", since not all countries ...
