New Brain Scans Show Screen Time Makes Kids Dumber
THEFEDERALIST.COM -- Recently published brain scans of young children demonstrate the effects of reading versus using screens (televisions, computers, smartphones, digital tablets and video games). In the scans of children who spent more time with books than screens (less than an hour of screen time a day), white matter was concentrated in the center of the brain. In children who spent more time with screens (more than an hour a day), white matter was scattered. This is significant because white matter makes up the brain's neural connections -- the pathways for brain activity. Concentrated white matter means thoughts and commands travel faster and invariably results in better cognitive performance in kids who stay off screens: they focus better, learn faster, and show greater mental flexibility and creativity.
